Anya Gushchin

Position: Agency liaison, Ethics section director
Brief Bio: Anya Gushchin first became involved in International Ophthalmology in 1998 when she began volunteering for the Himalayan Cataract Project as a technical consultant. Her first medical mission was in 2002 while on exchange with the University of Havana and ELAM. She earned an M.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where she also completed a Schweitzer Fellowship improving regional eye care access through the Guerilla Eye Service (a group she helped co-found that provides free comprehensive eye care in Southwestern Pennsylvania). She completed ophthalmology residency at UPMC Eye and Ear Institute and led three missions to Catacamas, Honduras with fellow residents. After completion of an Ophthalmic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Stanford University she completed an International Ophthalmology fellowship at the Moran Eye Center focusing on oculoplastic surgery in Nepal, Ghana and Ethiopia. She is passionate about providing skills-transfer training for ophthalmologists and ophthalmic staff seeking advanced training in their countries of origin. Her hobbies include: traveling, studying and teaching languages, hiking, skiing and kayaking.
